Students must be 18 years of age or older, High School Diploma/GED graduates and fully bilingual. That means that you are fluent in English and another language such as Spanish and you can speak in both languages with fluency.
For those interested in the 60 Hour Certificate Course, we also require you to have proof of at least 3 years of experience as an interpreter or a worker in the healthcare field.
MiTio provides open enrollment, i.e. students can enroll and start the program at any time during the year. The program is self paced and designed to be completed within 6 weeks; however, students are allowed up to six months to complete the course. The courses are all online, which means the student must have access to the internet throughout the program.
The course is language neutral, all of the material is in English, the student will translate/interpret materials into their other language.
Students are expected to participate in weekly telephone practice sessions to improve their interpreting skills, and in online discussion boards.

Completion of our program is a prerequisite for both employment as a medical interpreter and to sit for the certification exam for either NBCMI or CCHI.

Yes, MiTio also offers 3 Continuing Education Certificate 1 unit courses (10 hours or 1 CEU) for students who have already completed a 40 hour interpreting program and can provide proof of proficiency (Via a proficiency test such as LTI, diploma/degree from L2 country, or 15 credits of L2 language from a high school or university).
The courses are designed to be completed in one week; however, students are allowed up to 1 month to complete the course.
The courses include: Phone Interpreting,/Video Interpreting, Mental Health Interpreting, and Immigration Interpreting.
The 60 HR Certificate Course meets the CCHI and NBCMI requirements to take the certification exam. The 60 HR course covers the fundamentals of Medical Interpreting and Medical Terminology. However, MiTio requires that you have 3 Years of Healthcare experience to be eligible
The 160 HR Diploma Program covers the fundamentals and then goes more in depth into both Medical Interpreting and Medical Terminology. It includes Advanced Medical Terminology, 24 hours of live practice, and a 6 Hour Internship.
The Diploma Program is perfect for those with no previous medical experience or interpreting experience. This additional study is fast becoming a preference among top hospitals and may become the requirement in the future.
The course is designed to be completed in 6 weeks at 6-7 hours per week (see table below): Assignment Approximate Hours per Week Each Learning Path 1 hour – 90 minutes Each Practice Session 1 hour Each Project 1 hour – 90 minutes Forum Post per unit 1 hour Each Essay/Book Review 1 hour – 90 minutes b. The course may be completed in 6 months (self-paced schedule). However, we require that each student enrolled, complete at least one unit per month of enrollment in the program.
If a student is falling behind schedule due to illness, or other extenuating circumstance and is in need of an extension, the student is to contact facilitator via e-mail for an extension. Extensions will be granted once date of extension is confirmed by both student and facilitator. c. Students must achieve a grade of B or better to obtain certificate. That is equivalent to 830 points out of 1000. Upon course completion, student will obtain a transcript, a letter of completion, and a Certificate or *Diploma from MiTio in the mail within 14 business days. In order to obtain a Diploma, the student must complete 4 certificate courses (not CEU's) with MiTio.

The Proficiency test is an oral fluency test. After you pay for the test with the link below, you will have two weeks to schedule your test. Once the test is complete, it takes about a week to get the results. You may enroll into the program pending your exam results.

1. Trained Interpreters: MiTio is hiring independent contractors to work remotely from home as Video and/or Audio Interpreters. Interpreters set their own schedule and are paid monthly. Rates are provided after contract is signed. Must have a minimum 40 hour training, three years healthcare experience, and proof of proficiency in both languages, or Completion of MiTio 160 hour Diploma Program.
2. Live Session Facilitators: MiTio is hiring facilitators to facilitate our live sessions where mock encounters between patients and providers take place and live feedback is given. Must have a CMI and experience as an interpreter.
