WHO CAN ENROLL IN MITIO?
Students must be 18 years of age or older, High School Diploma/GED graduates and fully bilingual that means that you are fluent in English and another language such as Spanish and you can speak in both languages with fluency.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
MiTio provides open enrollment, i.e. students can enroll and start the program at any time during the year. The program is self paced and designed to be completed within 6 weeks; however, students are allowed up to six months to complete the course. The courses are all online, which means the student must have access to the internet throughout the program.
The course is language neutral, all of the material is in English, the student will translate/interpret materials into their other language.
Students are expected to participate in weekly telephone practice sessions to improve their interpreting skills, and in online discussion boards.

WILL THIS PROGRAM ALLOW ME TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT AND/OR SIT FOR THE CERTIFICATION EXAM?
Completion of our program is a prerequisite for both employment as a medical interpreter and to sit for the certification exam for either NBCMI or CCHI.
Most MiTio Alumni are employed around the country and those who have sat for certification exam have been successful!
WHICH COURSES DO I NEED TO OBTAIN A DIPLOMA?
Students must complete four certificate courses to obtain a Diploma from MITio.
The mix should include at least 1 Medical Background Course and 1 Interpreting or Translating Course. For example, a student may Complete the Medical and Intermediate Interpreting Certificates, as well as the Medical Terminology Certificate.
Another student may complete the three interpreting courses and the Anatomy and Physiology Certificate.The same mix can be made for the Translating Program.
DOES MITIO OFFER CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES?
Yes, MiTio also offers 3 Continuing Education Certificate 1 unit courses (10 hours or 1 CEU) for students who have already completed a 40 hour interpreting program and can provide proof of proficiency (Via a proficiency test such as LTI, diploma/degree from L2 country, or 15 credits of L2 language from a high school or university).
The courses are designed to be completed in one week; however, students are allowed up to 1 month to complete the course.
The courses include: Phone Interpreting,/Video Interpreting, Mental Health Interpreting, and Immigration Interpreting.

IS MITIO ACCEPTED NATIONALLY? IS IT ACCEPTED BY NBCMI OR CCHI?Yes, MiTio has been in existence since 2004. It is Accredited by the IMIA (International Medical Interpreters Association) and accepted nationally by employers and used by alumni to sit for their certification exam with NBCMI and/or CCHI MiTio Accreditation: http://mitio.org/about-mitio/accreditation
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 60 HR CERTIFICATE COURSE AND THE 160 HR DIPLOMA PROGRAM?
The 60 HR Certificate Course meets the CCHI and NBCMI requirements to take the certification exam. The 60 HR course covers the fundamentals of Medical INterpreting and Medical Terminology.
The 160 HR Diploma Program covers the fundamentals and then goes more in depth into both Medical Interpreting and Medical Terminology. It includes Advanced Medical Terminology, 2 hours of live practice, and an Internship.
This Program is perfect for those with no previous medical experience or interpreting experience. This additional study is fast becoming a preference among top hospitals and may become the requirement in the future.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MITIO AND ANOTHER ONLINE PROGRAM?MiTio has been in existence since 2004 and has a very good reputation in the industry as we have good outcomes. Most of our Alumni are employed and those that have sought certification have obtained it. We are also Accredited by the IMIA - International Medical Interpreters Association. Mitio is a 60 HR program not 40 HR program in keeping with new IMIA training standards. MiTio offers Live Practice Sessions that help you gain experience and prepare you for the oral certification exam
WHAT DOES THE 60 HR CERTIFICATE COVER?Medical Interpreting Lectures: Background of Interpreting; Basic purpose of the medical interpreter; Specific roles of interpreter defined; Interpreting pyramid; Barriers to communication; Interpreter roles in other settings; Choosing a role; Interpreter Code of Ethics; Memory development; HIPAA confidentiality guidelines Medical Terminology Lectures: Word Parts, The Human Body and Disease, Cell Tissues and Cancer, Integumentary System, and Skeletal System Medical Interpreting Videos: Trained versus untrained interpreters; The role of interpreters; The professional health interpreter; Need for interpreters; Interpreting in health care; The in-perfect encounter Text Book: Retaining one's composure, clarifying the role of the interpreter, being honest about the quality of the interpretation, ignoring offensive remarks, using assertive communication, staying transparent.
HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK DOES THE CLASS TAKE?The course is designed to be completed in 6 weeks at 6-7 hours per week (see table below): Assignment Approximate Hours per Week Each Learning Path 1 hour – 90 minutes Each Practice Session 1 hour Each Project 1 hour – 90 minutes Forum Post per unit 1 hour Each Essay/Book Review 1 hour – 90 minutes b. The course may be completed in 6 months (self-paced schedule). However, we require that each student enrolled, complete at least one unit per month of enrollment in the program. If a student is falling behind schedule due to illness, or other extenuating circumstance and is in need of an extension, the student is to contact facilitator via e-mail for an extension. Extensions will be granted once date of extension is confirmed by both student and facilitator. c. Students must achieve a grade of B or better to obtain certificate. That is equivalent to 830 points out of 1000. d. Upon course completion, student will obtain a transcript, a letter of completion, and a Certificate or *Diploma from MiTio in the mail within 14 business days. In order to obtain a Diploma, the student must complete 4 certificate courses (not CEU's) with MiTio.

HOW CAN I PROVE MY PROFICIENCY?Proof of other Language Proficiency: 1. Diploma or Transcripts from Foreign nation where other language is spoken; 2. Transcripts in other language from any US university; or 15+ semester hours of other language from US or Foreign university; 3. ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages): 3.5 + or LTI test score of Advanced or better. Send all documents to firstname.lastname@example.org
HOW CAN I TAKE THE LTI TEST?
The LTI test is an oral fluency test. After you pay for the LTI test with the link below, you will have two weeks to schedule your test. Once the test is complete, it takes about a week to get the results. You may enroll into the program pending your exam results.
